nhớ cho chính xác, có lẽ là năm 1987 lần đầu tiên tôi đi vào huyện Tháp Mười,
đó là một huyện nằm trong Đồng Tháp Mười của tỉnh Đồng Tháp.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Hôm đó, buổi
sáng tôi vào Công ty, làm một ít chuyện nhất là lãnh tiền đi công tác, nhận Giấy
giới thiệu để ra Xa cảng mua vé xe, và các giấy tờ khác để đi làm việc với
khách hàng là Phòng Công nghiệp huyện, để xây dựng một nhà máy đường công suất
nhỏ.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Chuyến đi ấy làm
tôi khó quên, ngày nay vẫn còn nhớ được nhiều kỷ niệm. Trước đó chừng một năm,
tôi đã có đến Mỹ Thọ, cách Thị xã Cao Lãnh chừng 10 cây số, để xây dựng một nhà
máy đường, trên nền nhà cũ của một ông Hội Đồng xưa, cho nên lần này tôi chủ
quan cho rằng đến Mỹ Thọ, rồi đón xe vào huyện Tháp Mười chừng 30 cây số, chắc
không có gì khó khăn, nên buổi trưa hôm ấy tôi mới ra Xa cảng Miền Tây.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Buổi trưa, hành
khách ít cho nên mua vé thì dễ, nhất là đã có Giấy Giới Thiệu đi công tác, cũng
khoảng 3 giờ hơn xe mới chạy, tới Mỹ Thọ đã gần 6 giờ chiều, tôi đứng đợi xe ở
ngã ba Ông Bầu, để đón xe vào huyện Tháp Mười, lúc ấy cũng có một người đàn ông
ngoài 30, đi với một cậu trai chừng 12, 13 tuổi họ nói chuyện với nhau, tôi
đoán là hai người có bà con hay họ là xóm giềng với nhau. Chúng tôi làm quen,
và biết cùng nhau đi vào huyện Tháp Mười.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Chờ cũng đã lâu,
có một chiếc xe lôi gắn máy từ hướng Cao Lãnh chạy tới, rồi ngừng ngay chỗ
chúng tôi, anh chạy xe lôi hỏi:</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'>                -<span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Mấy anh định đi
đâu ?</span></p>

đò từ lâu rồi! Xe tôi chạy nửa đường tới Mỹ An, các anh có đi thì đi, đoạn còn
lại thì chịu khó lội bộ, chớ giờ này không còn xe nào nữa đâu!</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Anh kia nhìn tôi
và nói:</span></p>

nghe! Đến nước này cũng phải chấp nhận vậy thôi.</span></p>

style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Thế là chúng tôi
lên xe, chiếc Honda 67 bắt đầu lăn bánh trên đường đất đỏ, nhìn cảnh vật hai
bên trời chiều, ánh sáng vàng vọt trãi dài trên cánh đồng lúa xanh. Nhà cửa
thưa thớt dần, tôi nghĩ mình đã đi vào Đồng Tháp Mười rồi đây.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Chiếc xe lôi kéo
chúng tôi chạy hơn nửa tiếng thì ngừng lại, anh xe lôi nói với chúng tôi:</span></p>

chia tay anh xe lôi rồi bắt đầu “Đường trường xa muôn vó câu bay dập vồn …”,  anh
bạn đồng hành với tôi nói:</span></p>

Những người hành quân có kinh nghiệm cho biết rằng, chúng ta đi bộ giờ đầu tiên
đi được 6 km, giờ thứ hai đi được 5 km và từ giờ thứ ba trở đi, đi bình quân 4
km. Như vậy chúng ta phải đi khoảng hơn 2 giờ mới tới nơi.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Trời bắt đầu chạng
vạng tối, cánh đồng từ từ chuyển sang màu đen, dọc theo đường đi, bên tay phải
chúng tôi là một con rạch, bên kia rạch xa xa mới có một ngôi nhà, còn bên nây
gần đường thỉnh thoảng có nhà, giờ ấy nhà nhà lên đèn, những ngọn đèn dầu leo
lét, chúng tôi đi khá lâu, cũng thấm mệt thì bên đường có một quán nước, thế là
chúng tôi vào quán nghỉ chân, chúng tôi gọi cà-phê, cậu trai uống nước chanh.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Sau khi giải
khát, chúng tôi tiếp tục lên đường, đêm không trăng, trời ít sao chúng tôi đi
thầm chỗ nào hơi sang sáng ấy là mặt lộ, chỗ nào tôi tối ấy là cỏ mọc bên đường,
chúng tôi đi như thế cho tới hơn 9 giờ đêm mới thấy ánh sáng đèn ở xa hiện ra,
đó là Thị Trấn Mỹ An, người bạn đồng hành với tôi về đến nhà ở bên nây cầu, còn
tôi phải đi tiếp qua khỏi cây cầu sắt bắt ngang con kênh lớn, để vào khu hành
chánh huyện Tháp Mười.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Cũng hơn 10 giờ
đêm, người ta mới đưa tôi đến khu nhà tập thể, nhà lá phên tre, nền đất, chủ hộ
đi công tác ở Sa Đéc, một mình tôi nằm trên chiếc giường rộng, khỏi nói là ngủ
một giấc rất ngon sau khi lội bộ chừng 12, 13 cây số trong cánh Đồng Tháp Mười
này.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Sáng ra thức dậy,
tôi thấy trước mặt căn nhà là một khu đất, cừ tràm đang dọng xuống đất, họ chuẩn
bị xây khu vực hành chánh của huyện, căn nhà tôi đang ở chỉ là căn nhà tạm mà
thôi, phía sau nhà là một con kinh nhỏ, những căn nhà tập thể này hình như cất
tạm trên một bờ bao.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Đến giờ làm việc,
người ta đưa tôi đi vào ngã sáu, đó là địa danh của một nơi hội tụ 6 con kinh
đào. Nghe nói có con kinh đi về Mỹ Tho, có con kinh đi về Long An. Trên chiếc
xuồng máy chỉ có anh Trưởng Phòng, một cậu chạy máy Koler, em này tên Liệt xưng
em, gọi tôi là thầy, tôi không nhớ, nhưng em nhắc đã có học với tôi mười mấy
năm trước, gia đình em ở Cao Lãnh vào đây làm việc, Trưởng Phòng Ẩn là người địa
phương.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Tại Ngã Sáu có một
ngôi chợ nhỏ, có những hàng quán tạp hóa, quán nước, chúng tôi đến địa điểm bên
kia rạch, nơi đó đang có một lò đường thủ công nhỏ, tôi quan sát thực địa để chọn
địa điểm cho xà-lan cập bến, cho xe cẩu bò lên bờ, xe cẩu sẽ bốc thiết bị từ
xà-lan lên bờ, rồi lại bốc thiết bị đặt vào vị trí. Nhiệm vụ tôi chỉ có vậy mà
thôi.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Cho nên sau khi
khảo sát thực địa, tôi có thể về Sàigòn, nhưng anh Ẩn nói với tôi:</span></p>

style='font-size:7.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'> </span><span

anh vào đây, ngủ lại thêm một đêm nữa đi, mai về sớm mới có xe, chiều nay tôi sẽ
đưa anh đi thăm vườn cò cho biết.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Tôi nghĩ, ở cái
chốn “khỉ ho cò gáy” này, có chi vui chơi đâu, tối tôi nằm chèo queo có một
mình thật là: “Buồn ơi là buồn!” Thôi cũng đành vậy, em Liệt nói thêm:</span></p>

gần 5 giờ, chúng tôi mới khởi hành đi, ngoài ba chúng tôi ra, còn có một cô thư
ký đi theo, chắc anh Ẩn muốn có thêm một bóng hồng cho vui. </span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Gần đến khu vườn
cò thì nhà ngói san sát, anh Ẩn giải thích:</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Những ngôi nhà
ngói này đều do lợi tức của cò. Mỗi nhà thu hoạch chừng vài năm thì cò dời tổ
sang mấy nhà lân cận, cứ thế mà hết nhà này lợp ngói đến nhà khác.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify'><span
style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Xuồng máy cập bến,
chúng tôi lên bờ, anh Ẩn vào xin phép chủ nhà cho chúng tôi đi thăm vườn cò. Đi
ra phía sau những căn nhà này là miếng vườn của họ, cũng trồng chuối, trồng dừa,
nhưng đặc biệt là có nhiều bụi tre, ấy là những chỗ cho cò đậu, cò làm ổ, chúng

lúc nào đó, những con cò con có lông cánh mà chưa bay được, người ta bắt cò con
vặt lông cánh, chỉ thu hoạch lông đó mà cất nhà ngói thì chúng ta đủ biết bao
nhiêu là cò.</span></p>
