hai tháng tin buồn cứ dồn dập, người quen biết lần lượt ra đi, có người đã chuẩn
bị hành trang, có kẻ ra đi đột ngột bỏ lại vợ dại con thơ như Châu Văn Xuân gốc
gác &quot;Ngã Ba Voi&quot; Chi Lăng, từ lúc phát hiện bịnh đến khi lìa đời
không đầy hai tháng, một thanh niên trẻ đầy nhiệt tâm, cố gắng làm việc để lo
cho gia đình cho bà con nghèo khổ ở quê nhà, rồi tới anh Lưu Nhơn Nghĩa, Đỗ Thị
Trang . Có lẽ trên thiên đàng thiếu người đánh cờ nên thượng đế hết gọi người
này tới mời người khác, còn địa ngục không còn chổ chứa hay Diêm Vương ăn hối lộ
đổi tên hoặc làm lơ nên mấy tên &quot;ác ôn&quot; vẫn sống hại đời. Để thoát khỏi
cái không khí sầu thảm, vợ chồng tôi lên xe làm một cuộc hành trình ngắn, đi
coi &quot;lá vàng&quot;. Vùng Đông Bắc Mỹ quê hương thứ hai của&nbsp; gia đình
tôi nổi tiếng về cái đẹp của &quot;mùa lá rụng&quot;. Ở đây mấy chục năm cứ quần
quật lo ăn lo mặc chưa một phút sống như &quot;văn nhân thi sĩ &quot;, ngắm lá
vàng rơi.</span></p>

giờ sáng chúng tôi đã rời nhà. Sau khi đi thăm vùng biển phụ cận, nơi lá vẫn
còn xanh nhưng nước thì lạnh buốt mà người lại đông như nem (vì là cuối tuần của
ngày lễ Columbus Day), chúng tôi dừng chân nơi phòng hướng dẫn (Information
center) bên cạnh xa lộ, vì trời cũng sắp về chiều cần phải nghĩ ngơi luôn tiện
hỏi đường và địa điểm ngắm cảnh mùa thu. Nhân viên nơi phòng hướng dẫn trả lời:</span></p>

có nhiều cảnh đẹp, nhiều trạm nghỉ chân, nhà hàng, sau đó qua đường 16 trở về
Boston. </span></p>

tôi có lên mạng nên biết mấy khách sạn có tiếng không còn phòng, nhưng trên xa
lộ nhà ngủ mọc như nấm, chẳng lẽ không có chỗ nghỉ chân?”.  Trở lên xa lộ đi
thêm mấy exit theo máy dẫn đường (Navigation), chúng tôi rời xa lộ vào một nhà
ngủ gần nhất, tới nơi tôi mới giật mình, cái nhà ngủ không ra hồn mà chỉ còn một
phòng giá 180 đô một đêm, nhưng đã có người đặt, họ dặn để lại số điện thoại,
vì sau nửa giờ nếu khách không tới họ sẽ cho chúng tôi thuê. Thế là lá vàng đâu
chưa thấy chỉ thấy mặt trời bị che bởi đám mây đen, rồi cơn mưa như thác đổ, vợ
chồng đành ngồi trong xe nhìn mưa rơi lòng buồn vô hạn, càng buồn hơn khi nhà
ngủ gọi cho biết phòng đã có người.&nbsp; Nghe tiếng mưa rơi không hiểu sao tôi
trở thành thi sĩ miệng lẩm bẩm như người lên cơn:</span></p>

&quot;Bà có muốn mướn không, để tôi trả lời với người khách đầu dây kia&quot;&nbsp;
Dĩ nhiên tôi nói &quot;Yes&quot; . Khi nghe tôi hỏi phòng ốc như thế nào bà
thao thao bất tuyệt căn nhà nhỏ tôi thuê đêm nay ở được 4 người và 2 em bé, nó
có phòng khách, nhà bếp&nbsp; v.v...&nbsp; Từ địa điểm xe đang đậu đến nhà ngủ,
theo người đàn bà trên điện thoại, &nbsp;khoảng 35 dậm, xe chạy khoảng 45 phút,
khi đánh địa chỉ vào máy dẫn đường có bốn cách tới nơi, thứ nhất &quot;đi ngắn
giờ&quot;, thứ hai &quot;đi đường ngắn&quot;, thứ ba &quot;đi trên xa lộ&quot;,
thứ tư &quot; không nhớ ??&quot;, dĩ nhiên tôi chọn &quot;ngắn giờ&quot;, có lẽ
trình độ anh văn của vợ chồng quá giỏi nghe không kịp &quot;turn left, turn
right&quot;&nbsp; quẹo phải quẹo trái, quẹo một lúc cái máy lại nói &quot;nếu
được xin quay đầu trở lại&quot;, tôi chán nản đổi qua &quot;đường ngắn&quot; nó
chỉ cũng y như trước, sau vài lần xoay đầu (U turn) chúng tôi mới tìm được con
đường nhỏ mà nó muốn chỉ, trời tối lại mưa to gió lớn đường trơn trợt vận tốc
cho chạy 30 dậm 1 giờ nhưng chỉ chạy 20 là đã chùn chân, hai bên đường chỉ thấy
mấy cái bảng cảnh cáo đường cong, đường đèo, không có một ngọn đèn, năm khi mười
họa mới có một chiếc xe chạy ngược chiều, hơn một giờ chúng tôi mới qua khỏi
con đường &quot;chết&quot; tới thành phố, đến khi tìm được nhà ngủ cũng mất gần
2 tiếng đồng hồ, nếu ngay lúc đầu về nhà có lẽ gần và an toàn hơn. Khi vào
motel người chủ chỉ bản đồ mới biết mình đã đi đường tắc băng qua núi như cái
máy nói &quot;đi đường ngắn&quot;, còn bị bà ta chọc quê:</span></p>

màu vàng xen lẫn màu xanh của lá. Nhưng khi nhìn những chiếc lá đổi màu lại thấy
chạnh lòng cho cái tuổi về già của mình, rồi nghĩ tới bè bạn, tới đời người sao
ngắn ngủi quá, lúc sống tranh giành hơn thua, có người cho mình là tài là giỏi,
kẻ thì quá khiêm nhường mặc ai chê dại chê khờ nhưng dù có khôn có dại khi nằm xuống
cũng như chiếc lá, nếu may mắn trôi theo giòng nước đến phương trời vô tận, chẳng
may rớt bên lề cũng bị người đời chà đạp, có vui sướng gì mà ngắm với nhìn, thế
