học sinh bắt gặp con rắn xanh nằm uể oải gần ống cống, chúng chạy đến báo cho
giáo viên trực. Anh lao công trong trường đóng một khúc gỗ hình chữ T chậm rãi
đến, rắn thấy động, chui vào ống cống. Tôi lấy làm lạ, miếng gỗ mong manh làm
sao diệt được rắn. Anh trả lời, khúc gỗ chỉ chận rắn để xem rắn loại gì, nếu muốn
giết rắn, anh đã dùng xẻng. Vậy mà tôi vẫn nghĩ anh đến để giết rắn. Một lúc
sau, rắn lại bò lên nằm sau lớp, một giáo viên rành về rắn đến quan sát, cho biết
đó là rắn lục trên cây, không có nọc độc, không nên giết nó, nó cũng vô hại như
những con kỳ nhông hay rắn mối thường gặp trên sân trường. Nhưng sau đó, anh lao
công bắt buộc phải giết rắn, vì học sinh nhốn nháo khó học. Mấy cô giáo bực bội
than phiền về chuyện rắn bị giết. Diễn tiến từ đầu đến cuối, mọi người, kể cả
học sinh đều thong thả, không ai tỏ vẻ sợ hãi và có ý định giết rắn.</span><span

nầy, biết là rắn hổ đất (black snake) loại rắn độc, học sinh được dặn phải
tránh xa và bà Hiệu Trưởng điện thoại cho chuyên viên bắt rắn đến. Học sinh
tiếp tục chơi đùa, giáo viên tiếp tục uống trà.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

sinh được theo giáo viên tề tựu tới sân tập họp. Trên sân trường, xác rắn nằm
như khúc dây màu đen. Người bắt rắn vạm vỡ, râu tóc rậm che nửa mặt, mặc quần
ngắn, mang giày ống. Anh ta bình tĩnh chờ các lớp học sinh đến ngồi chung
quanh. Anh đứng im lìm, tay cầm cây móc bằng kim loại dài, cọng cây bằng ngón
tay út, bên cạnh là cái bao vải xám, ngoài ra không có dụng cụ gì để giết được
rắn, anh là người bắt rắn chứ không phải là người giết rắn.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

ngồi yên chung quanh, anh bắt đầu kể chuyện rắn, đặc tính của các loài rắn độc
và rắn không độc ở Úc, môi trường rắn sinh sống, đặc tính của các loài rắn,
khoảng cách an toàn và cách chữa trị khi bị rắn cắn. Anh giải thích rất mạch
lạc vì anh thông thạo về loài bò sát nầy, anh là luật sư bào chữa cho khúc rắn
nằm trên sân. Rắn bị đập gẫy lưng trước khi bò đến đây nằm chết. Anh nhẹ nhàng
kéo khúc rắn giảng cho học sinh từng bộ phận, diễn tả từng động tác của rắn hổ
đất tấn công khi bị cùng đường. Anh chỉ cho học sinh xem những vết thẹo rắn
trên chân anh. Giọng anh trầm trầm, không vướng chút hận thù hay sợ hãi rắn.
Anh thay thế cho rắn giải thích cho loài người, vì rắn không biết nói tiếng
người, loài người tìm giết rắn, rắn bị giết vô số, rắn cắn người vì tự vệ, rất
ít người chết vì rắn, rắn không có tay, chỉ có miệng và nanh. Người ghét rắn,
rắn sợ người, khi nghe tiếng chân người trên mặt đất, rắn sợ hãi lủi vô bụi
trốn. Người có nhà, rắn có hang, &quot;nếu ai phá nhà anh, anh có giận
không?&quot;. Anh vừa giảng bài học Vạn Vật cho học sinh, vừa giảng về lòng
nhân và sự công bình.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
